We are thrilled to introduce the ultimate world to our new Lead Creative Designer, Marijo Zlatić!
Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from and when did you start playing ultimate?
I’m Marijo (pronounced mah-ree-oh), born and raised in Europe’s hidden gem, Slovenia. I got introduced to ultimate a little over 8 years ago. At the time I was playing basketball and paintball competitively, so there was very little time to spend on this “Ultimate” thing.

In 2015 I decided to move to Toronto on a one year work and holiday visa. Since I didn’t know anyone here, my plan was to meet people through frisbee and finally take the sport more seriously. Fast-forward a few years and here we are! It’s 2020, I’m a permanent resident, GOAT player and your new graphic designer. Some (like my girlfriend Angie) might say I took it all a little too seriously…
What’s been the best game or point of ultimate you’ve ever played?
2018 WUCC pre-quarters against Colony was hands down the best game I was ever a part of. Intensity, skill, determination, sportsmanship – everything was there. And the best part? We came out on top on Universe point!
How did you get your start in design? How would you describe your style?
It all started in the late 90s when I got my first computer. Since I was one of the first kids on the block to have it, I was always asked to print out random posters. Over the next few years I mastered Word 97 ClipArt, WordArt and moved on to Photoshop 7 and Dreamweaver.
After graduating, I was accepted to the Institute and Academy of Multimedia where I became a “Multimedia Engineer” - for real, I have a diploma to prove it! From design, photography, videography, to 3D and music production, we did it all. Shortly after, I got my first job in the biggest publishing company in Slovenia, working for some of the top magazines in the world (Cosmopolitan, Elle, Playboy…). Even though I’ve gone to school and worked in multiple countries in my field, some things have stayed the same - I’m still the guy who's always asked to design some random stuff for my friends :) I tend to think I don’t really have a style but a quick glance at my work says otherwise, I clearly like it clean and simple.

At this time? WUGC.
Favorite thing to do outside of designing and ultimate?
I love travelling, all things basketball, exploring new coffee shops in the city and “saving the world” over some good food and beers with my friends.
