Damme Slamme has being running for 5 years now, originally the brain child of Flyght Club it has now
developed that pilgrimage status which only exceptional tournaments achieve.
Women from across the country descend on Clifton Sports campus in Nottingham to partake in the ritual of play hard and
party hard, all for the coveted tea cake trophy.
But this years event proved to offer even more. GB Women may
have their targets set on a medal in Vancouver but they are also turning
their attention to nurturing Women’s Ultimate along the way. The squad is
aiming to get more women, playing more Ultimate, more often. Added to this is a
desire to develop skills of the participants.
Saturday featured a 12 minute showcase game, in which a Sue Pioli layout block provided the highlight. Throughout the
first day the ladies filled the intervals between games with coaching clinics
that went beyond the standard cutting and stacking taught to most new players.
Psychological aspects of playing good Ultimate were conveyed to eager students.
Body language, positive thinking and setting personal goals were amongst the
techniques covered.

On Sunday each squad member
took captaincy of a team in the days Hat Tournament, assisting the competitors
in applying the concepts they had learnt the day before. An intriguing
technique tried out by some was to visualize being a player they admired or
whose style of play they to emulate.
Aware of their potential as ambassadors of the sport and
role models for upcoming talent GB Women are setting the standard for national
teams’ involvement with the grass roots development of the sport. We wish them
all the best with their future endeavors.
